The weather is getting warmer and more people are spending time outside. This means that outdoor deck maintenance should be on your radar right now.

If you don’t take care of it now, you could find yourself in a bad situation later on when the cold weather arrives! In this post, we’ll discuss tips for maintaining your outdoor deck so that it can look great all year long!

Clean It

One of the first steps in caring for your outdoor deck is to clean it. Removing dirt, debris, and mildew twice per year doesn’t take much effort and keeps your deck in tip-top shape!

Your cleaning method will vary depending on what your deck is made of. If you use chemicals to power wash or clean, make sure that they are safe for wood decks.

Fix It

Don’t fall through a hole in your rotting deck! Inspect your deck for wear and tear and replace any boards that are rotting or have started to become detached.

Inspect your railings and stairs so they are structurally sound. Make sure that there is no rot or damage, which can make them unsafe as well as unsightly.

Protect It

To lengthen the lifespan of your deck, use a sealer to protect the wood and keep it looking new.

Follow manufacturer’s instructions when applying sealer to make sure you are following safety precautions as well as making your deck last longer, which will save you money in upkeep!

An oil-based stain or paint can protect against UV rays that cause fading of your deck’s color over time. Thompson’s Wood Oil protects against moisture damage while also making them look beautiful as well!

If you have other types of decking materials such as composite lumber, concrete pavers, or even roof tiles these can be cleaned similarly but should not require any coating afterward unless they are very porous.

Decorate It

“Deck” out your deck with a beautiful patio furniture set and other decorative items to make it feel comfortable and inviting.

Add an outdoor rug for foot comfort when sitting on the deck. This will also help prevent splinters from barefoot kiddos enjoying outdoor time!

Consider adding lights under the railing to illuminate your backyard space at night-time hours too.

Lastly, think about flowers and plants in pots. They’re aesthetically pleasing and add fragrance! Some great choices are lilacs, lavender, roses, and basil.

Who doesn’t love spending time on their porch or deck in the summer? It’s a great way to relax and enjoy the beautiful weather!
